Wineglass Bay & Oyster Bays, Tasmania – scenic cruising

Jutting out from Tasmania’s eastern coast, the Freycinet Peninsula is home to Freycinet National Park, a beautiful wilderness area encompassing pink granite mountains and jagged peaks that overlook the sparkling waters of the Tasman Sea.

Located within the park are two gorgeous bays, best viewed from the sea. Named for its shape, Wineglass Bay is the smaller of the two, a secluded area with glistening sapphire waters that give way to the velvety white sands of one of the world’s most stunning beaches. Broader in size, Great Oyster Bay is steeped in history, and served as the former stomping grounds of Tasmanian Aborigines who harvested shellfish along the coast.

Both bays attract tourists for their dramatic beauty and for the wealth of outdoor activities they both provide, including whale watching, sea kayaking, snorkelling and diving.

Port Arthur, Tasmania.

Port Arthur is named for George Arthur, the Lieutenant Governor of Tasmania from 1823 to 1837. It was Arthur who converted a small convict lumber station on the Tasman Peninsula into the most feared penal colony in Australia. Preserved today as the Port Arthur Historical Site, the then state-of-the-art prison was designed to hold repeat offenders in isolation and hard labour. When it closed in 1877, it marked the end of a dark chapter in English and Australian history.

Port Arthur is also your gateway to the wild and scenic Tasman Peninsula. Its wave-lashed coast is the site of spectacular rock formations such as Tasman Arch, the Tessellated Pavement and the Devil’s Kitchen. The peninsula is also home to small farms, superb fruit orchards and acclaimed vineyards.

The Tasman Peninsula is one of the last refuges for the endangered Tasmanian devil. The Tasmania Devil Conservation Park is in the forefront of protecting these unique – if surly and downright disagreeable – remnants of Tasmanian prehistory.

Note: Port Arthur is an anchorage port. Passengers transfer to shore via ship’s tender.

Hobart, Tasmania.

Tasmania’s capital has much in common with Sydney. Founded but a few years later, Hobart also owes its origins to the establishment of a penal colony – and its natural setting is just as impressive. Seen from its fine deep-water harbour, Hobart spills over the lower reaches of the Derwent Valley as Mt. Wellington towers in the background. Much of the city’s heritage is centred on the historic waterfront. North of the city stretches the vast parkland of the Queen’s Domain. Many of Tasmania’s other attractions are within easy reach of Hobart.

With more than 90 National Trust buildings, Hobart, founded in 1804, combines colonial character with a sophisticated metropolitan lifestyle.

Phillip Island, Australia

This small island off the coast of Victoria is Australia’s most popular destination after Ayers Rock. The reason? The island is home to the Fairy Penguin, the smallest of the 17 species of penguin. Your ship makes a special call at Phillip Island to afford passengers the opportunity to view these charming creatures in their native habitat.

Phillip Island is an anchorage call. Passengers transfer to shore via ship’s tender.

Melbourne, Australia.

Victoria may be Australia’s smallest continental state, but Melbourne, its capital, is big on everything. With a population of 4.25 million people living in 59 separately named communities within 715 square miles, Melbourne is a sprawling city offering culture, art, fashion and friendly, sports-minded Australians. It is also an easy city to explore. At the heart of the city is the Golden Mile, the city’s governmental and commercial centre, home to hotels, shops, restaurants and theatres.

Originally part of New South Wales, Victoria became a colony in its own right in 1851. The discovery of gold propelled Melbourne’s growth to prominence and prosperity.

Travel Tip: Melbourne is pronounced “mell-burn.”

Beijing (Tianjin), China.

Literally the “Northern Capital,” Beijing has been the seat of power in China since the days of Kublai Khan. At the heart of this immense, fascinating metropolis is the Forbidden City, a 250-acre complex of palaces, pavilions and courtyards where the Emperor ruled from his Dragon Throne. Even the most seasoned travellers will experience a sense of awe as they approach the Forbidden City’s 25-feet high walls and enter through the magnificent Meridian Gate, a symbol of the sun at its zenith – and of imperial power and splendour.

The capital of The People’s Republic of China covers a staggering area of some 6,336 square miles and boasts a population of over 20 million people.

Osaka, Japan.

For centuries, Osaka was Japan’s cultural and commercial gateway to Asia – the point of entry both for trade goods and, most importantly, cultural influences that shaped Japanese society. From tea to Zen, from art to science and philosophy, Osaka was Japan’s contact with the great East Asian cultures that flourished in China and Korea. The city reached its zenith in the late 16th century, when the great feudal lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi made Osaka his capital. Toyotomi was master of Japan, and an immense administrative and commercial center rapidly developed around Osaka Castle. After Toyotomi’s death, the nation’s seat of power shifted from Osaka to a sleepy little fishing village called Edo – modern Tokyo. While overshadowed by Tokyo, Osaka remains Japan’s second largest city and a vital commercial centre.

Modern Osaka is home to monuments from Japan’s past including Toyotomi’s immense castle and the Sumiyoshi Shrine. The city is also your gateway to Kyoto, Japan’s ancient imperial capital and the nation’s cultural and spiritual centre.

Taipei (Keelung), Taiwan.

The oldest Chinese reference to Taiwan dates back to the Han Dynasty in the 3rd century B.C. However, it wasn’t until the 17th century A.D. that Chinese Hakka traders first settled on the island. These bold merchants were soon followed by European and Asian adventurers seeking to control and colonize the strategic island. The most famous migration of all occurred in 1948, when the government of the Republic of China fled the mainland.

Taipei is Taiwan’s capital city and one of the world’s most important commercial centres. Despite its turbulent history, Taiwan today boasts an economy that is the envy of the world. Modern Taiwan is a world leader in the production of bicycles, computer chips, plastics, chemicals and computer notebooks. Taipei is a sophisticated modern metropolis that has not forgotten its rich traditional past.

The port of Keelung is your gateway to Taiwan. Visit the bustling city of Taipei and other interesting areas surrounding on this fascinating island in the East China Sea.

Hong Kong, China.

Skyscrapers form a glistening forest of steel and glass, junks and sampans ply the busy harbour waters, and the green, dragon-crested hills of Kowloon beckon. Welcome to Hong Kong, one of the world’s great travel destinations. Now a semi-autonomous region of China, Hong Kong – literally “Fragrant Harbour” – has lost none of its charm, excitement or exoticism. Modern skyscrapers and luxury hotels climb the slopes of Hong Kong Island. Narrow streets are crammed with noodle vendors, fortunetellers and bonesetters. The endless array of shops offer the visitor everything from hand-tailored suits and ancient porcelain to the latest consumer electronics. And everywhere more than seven million people are moving at a breathtaking pace in one of the world’s great monuments to capitalism, commerce and enterprise.

The former Crown Colony has enough attractions to last a lifetime. To take in the entire spectacle, head to Victoria Peak for panoramic views. Enjoy lunch on one of the city’s floating restaurants. Walk down one of the crowded streets to take the city’s rapid pulse. And whether you think you are in the mood or not – shop. After all, you are in the duty-free capital of the world.

Nha Trang, Vietnam.

One of Vietnam’s most popular seaside resorts, Nha Trang offers white-sand beaches, azure waters and palm trees swaying in the breeze. Gaily painted fishing boats line the harbours. Small farm villages nestle in the countryside’s lush valleys. Yet this relaxed city of some 300,000 souls boasts a long and storied past.

Nha Trang was the capital of the Champa Kingdom, which dominated this corner of Southeast Asia for 13 centuries. North of the city, the great Cham Tower complex overlooks the Cai River and offers mute testimony to the kingdom’s glory. Today, the towers attract locals and visitors alike, many of whom come to meditate while contemplating superb views of the river and the bay.

Nha Trang’s tourist district consists of a scattering of colonial-era beachfront hotels and sidewalk cafes. The city was a popular spot for U.S. servicemen during the Vietnam War.

Ho Chi Minh City (Phu My), Vietnam.

Over three decades have passed since the Vietnam War ended with the fall of Saigon. Today, the name of this bustling metropolis on the Mekong River is Ho Chi Minh City. Yet, the essence of the city, a major trading centre since the 18th century, remains unchanged. The air is filled with the cries of street hawkers and honking horns. Bicycles, motorbikes and automobiles fly down the boulevards at dizzying speeds. And everywhere, friendly faces and warm greetings meet you.

The port of Phu My (pronounced “Foo Me”) is your gateway to Ho Chi Minh City and the seaside resort of Vung Tau.

Bali (Benoa), Indonesia.

For over a century, Bali has fascinated the Western imagination. The island embodies the very essence of the exotic and mysterious East. Steep hillsides of tropical green reveal terraced rice paddies while plantations of coffee, banana, cacao and fragrant spices line the roads. Monkeys haunt the grounds of a sacred temple in a forest, while traditional villages produce intricately stylised batik, superb jewellery and beautiful paintings. And Balinese dance, with its angular movements and rhythms, remains somehow stirring and shocking. Bali may be accessible, but it remains forever exotic.

For all Bali’s scenic beauty, the island has weathered great natural disasters, from the 1963 eruption of Mt. Agung to a massive earthquake in 1976. The island emerged relatively unscathed from the great tsunami of 2004.

Note: All motorcoaches are equipped with air-conditioning..

Darwin, Australia.

Closer to Indonesia than to any other Australian city, Darwin is the capital of the “Top End” – the remote, vast Northern Territory. Home to more than half of the territory’s population, the city reflects the rugged endurance and individualism required to survive the Outback. Darwin also boasts a colourful history to add to that heritage. During World War II the Japanese bombed the city and threatened invasion. In 1974, Cyclone Tracy cut a destructive swath through the region. In addition, man-eating crocodiles, tropical monsoons, searing heat and bush fires that burn for weeks are all part of everyday life.

Locals in the Top End consume over 60 gallons of beer a year. All those empties don’t go to waste: Each year Darwin residents compete in the Beer Can Regatta, a race with boats, rafts and other vessels manufactured out of beer cans.

Brisbane, Australia.

Once considered the “country cousin” among Australian cities, Brisbane is today the nation’s third-largest metropolis – and one of the most desirable places to live in the country. Lying on the banks of the meandering Brisbane River, this cosmopolitan city boasts elegant 19th-century sandstone buildings, a lively cultural scene and superb parklands. Brisbane is also your gateway to uniquely Australian adventures, be it the theme parks of the Gold Coast or Queensland’s dazzling beaches.

The beaches south of Brisbane form Queensland’s Gold Coast. Travel tip: Brisbane is pronounced “Bris-bin.”

Sydney, Australia.

As your ship passes Harbour Heads, you are presented with the shimmering skyline of Sydney – hailed by many seafarers as “the most beautiful harbour in the world.” Two prominent landmarks, Harbour Bridge and the sail-like curves of the Sydney Opera House, grace the backdrop of this picturesque harbour. There is a wealth of adventure waiting in Sydney – from its cosmopolitan city centre to miles of beautiful beaches and the Blue Mountains.

Australia’s oldest and largest city was born in 1788 with the arrival of the “First Fleet” transporting 760 British convicts. Today, Sydney is the largest port in the South Pacific and is often voted the most popular destination in the South Pacific.

Sydney.

Experience the diversity of this vibrant city with its world-famous icons. Sydney is home to two of the world’s most famous landmarks – the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House, both perfectly situated on the magnificent harbour. Enjoy the sun and surf at one of the many beaches, discover the thrilling entertainment or wander through the chic shopping precincts.

It was at Sydney Cove on 26 January 1788, not too far from where your ship docks, that the Union Flag of Great Britain was hoisted by a weary group of settlers, consisting mainly of convicts, marines and sailors led by Captain Arthur Phillip. They had just completed an epic journey from England in eleven small ships collectively known as the First Fleet. Before European settlement, Sydney was home to the indigenous Eora, Dharug, Tharawal and Kuring-gai peoples. Engravings by these original inhabitants can still be found on rocky outcrops in the bush around the city and in its suburbs. Sydney has a wildness and uniqueness that derives from its convict beginnings. It also has a rich cultural and artistic vibrancy that constantly rivals other cities.

Alotau.

Capital of Papua New Guinea’s Milne Bay Province, Alotau is steeped in history, rich in culture and blessed with natural beauty. As well as being naturally stunning, Alotau is rich in WWII history. The area where the invading Japanese army suffered their first land defeat before the Kokoda Track battle, a memorial park at the old battle site commemorates the event.

The gateway to some of the most remote island communities remaining in the world today, this is a place that is enriched with age-old culture and traditions. The area claims its fame in the history books where the Battle of Milne Bay took place in 1942 and an Australian digger was awarded a Victora Cross for bravery – Put these two elements together and add a beautiful harbour, relaxed atmosphere and friendly locals, and you are left with a pretty amazing destination – a place whose visitors can quickly and easily find something they love, no matter what their tastes.

Madang.

Divers, snorkellers and mariners beware – you may never want to leave.

This is arguably Papua New Guinea’s most popular location for on and under water adventures, and that’s saying something considering the diving and snorkelling are excellent almost everywhere you turn in this country. Water visibility is fantastic, small islands dot the coastline and the little mountain flanked coastal town sits waiting, filled with culture and opportunities for exploration.

In Madang you’ll have the chance to witness the fascinating tradition of the Goroka mud men in action and also a very special ‘sing sing’, where tribe members from the highland areas come together and share their culture and traditions with each other, as well as P&O Cruises passengers.

Vitu Islands (Scenic Cruising Port).

Many of these small islands and islets are uninhabited. They are literally just drops of sand in the ocean. We won’t be landing here, but thought you might like to take a closer look, so we’ve arranged to anchor just offshore. Enjoy some time contemplating the quiet and tranquillity, and marvelling at the sights.

Rabaul.

Located on Papua New Guinea’s northeastern tip, this province – blessed with natural beauty but plagued with an unlucky past – has literally risen from the ashes. The former capital of New Britain is a town with a colourful history and no stranger to rebuilding itself from the ground up. It’s been destroyed by volcano eruptions in 1937 and 1994, as well as being all but flattened by aerial bombardment in World War II. Its kilometres of underground tunnels built by the Japanese during its occupation in World War II are a testament to its wartime past. Since 1994, Rabaul has returned to life and its harbour is still one of the most impressive in the entire Pacific basin.

Kiriwina Island (Trobriand Island).

Here, one of the world’s most intact island cultures resides on one of the world’s most untouched islands, and you are among the select few who are lucky enough to experience them both. Located in Papua New Guinea’s Milne Bay Province, Kiriwina is the largest and by far the most populous of the Trobriand Islands, and home to one of the most colourful and fascinating cultures on earth.

Conflict Islands.

Possibly the most peaceful place on earth. Don’t be fooled by the name, this is paradise in the Coral Sea! The Conflict Islands are made up of 21 untouched islands in Papua New Guinea. With spectacular reefs, palm trees and deep blue seas, the Conflict Islands are home an incredible array of marine wildlife.
