Itinerary

Day 1. Gamboa, Panama – Tour Begins
Welcome to Panama, a country of lush rainforests, rich history, diverse wildlife and spectacular coastlines. Your tour opens at the Gamboa Rainforest Resort where you’ll enjoy your private balcony and hammock overlooking the beautiful surroundings. During your leisure time, feel free to use the complimentary bikes or kayaks to explore.

Day 2. Gamboa – Emberá Village – Gamboa

Meet your fellow travellers during a welcome breakfast. Your guide then leads you on a nature walk through the resort’s jungle forest and gardens for a chance to spot unique birds as well as various flora and fauna. Set off on an excursion to an Emberá indigenous village. Board dugout canoes for a scenic ride up the Chagres River to a settlement of Emberá, the “Keepers of the Rainforest.” The Emberá strive to preserve their heritage and love to share their traditional techniques of home building and handicrafts – such as basket weaving and tagua nut carving – with visitors. Join in their dances and partake in a simple lunch cooked traditionally. The remainder of your day is free to enjoy Gamboa Rainforest Resort.

Day 3. Gamboa – Panama Canal Cruise – Panama City – Gamboa

Start the day off with an incredible highlight. Board the Pacific Queen for a partial transit cruise through the Panama Canal. Enjoy lunch onboard and pass through two locks as you revel in a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see this incredible engineering feat first-hand. Learn all about its construction and operation from your onboard guides. Disembark at Flamenco Marina in Panama City. Visit the Mercado de Mariscos, a seafood market, and try fresh Panamanian ceviche. Continue to Casco Viejo, the Old Quarter. It’s your choice on how you will visit this UNESCO World Heritage site, which was settled in 1673. Perhaps you’ll follow your guide for a short walking tour down its cobblestone streets showcasing the Plaza de la Independencia, the Presidential Palace, the National Theatre, plus restored colonial churches and monuments. For a more immersive experience you may journey through this same neighbourhood with a local resident…hear the story of the Casco Viejo’s comeback from a member of the community who will take you through the place he calls home, highlighting the incredible revitalization of this historic area and its people.

Day 4. Gamboa – Anton Valley

Arrive at Miraflores Locks Visitor Centre to view the Panama Canal and learn about its rich past, present and future as you watch ships traverse the lock system. Drive a short distance on the famed Pan-American Highway before heading up the mountains to Anton Valley, a community nestled inside the second largest volcanic crater in the world. Meet the locals at the handicraft market and try your hand at negotiations, a local pastime of market-goers. You’ll get to peruse artisan souvenirs made by indigenous peoples, including the “mola” embroidery of the Kuna Yala. Afterwards, check in to your hotel at the base of the mountains that make up the crater.

Day 5. Anton Valley

Begin the day with a visit to the Museum El Valle which houses a small collection ranging from geological wonders to pre-Columbian art. Your next stop is a not-for-profit orchid nursery that dedicates itself to cultivating and conserving local and regional orchids. It houses over 100 different types. Continue to the El Valle Amphibian Conservation Centre, working to protect critically endangered species including the emblematic Panamanian Golden Frog, said to bring good luck to anyone who sees it. Your afternoon is free to continue exploring this charming mountain community.

Day 6. Anton Valley – Chitré

This morning, step into the heartland of Panama and become immersed in the culture as you visit a village of artists. Interact with makers of the famous Panama hat and see first-hand how these wearable works of art are created. Continue on to meet the famous cigar rollers of Panama, whose craft has become legendary within the cigar community. Next, visit an orange grove, one of the region’s main crops, and savour the taste of an orange fresh from the tree. Head north to Chitré, one of the first Spanish settlements in Panama, established in 1558. Get to know a traditional way of cooking at a clay oven bakery and sample these delectable sweets. After visiting a local pottery artist, it’s on to a sugarcane mill for a taste of sugarcane juice called “guarapa.” Next, pause to experience the region’s pre-Columbian and colonial times at the local museum. Tonight, get acquainted with the local culture at dinner featuring a folklore and dance show.

Day 7. Chitré

Spend the day meeting the locals in Chitré, the “folklore capital” of Panama. Meet Panamanian women who have dedicated their lives to making the handwoven pollera dress. Then it’s off to spend time with a famous local artist whose whimsical masks are used in traditional Panamanian parades. Your day continues with a visit to one of Panama’s famous rum producers. Visit the historic hacienda to discover the life of the founder, a Spanish immigrant who brought jobs and prestige to the region with the development of the distillery. Learn the art of making rum, as well as the local drink “seco,” also distilled from sugarcane. If you like, you may take an ox-cart ride through the sugarcane fields. Enjoy a typical lunch, then finally sample the product for yourself during a tasting session and discussion in the bodega. The rest of the afternoon is yours to enjoy at your hotel. Tonight, you have the option of experiencing an authentic home-hosted meal in a local family’s house; take this opportunity to learn about their lives, culture and food.

Day 8. Chitré – Playa Bonita

Journey to Playa Bonita, just outside of Panama City. Arrive midday to soak up the sun and ocean views from your beach-front property. You can also meander through the hotel’s shops or use their complimentary kayaks. After enjoying some fun and relaxation at your resort, bid farewell to Panama at a special dinner.

Day 2. San Jose – Doka Coffee Estate – Guanacaste

Journey through the lush countryside of the Central Valley to the fertile region world-renowned for its coffee. A tour of the Doka Coffee Estate highlights the history and cultivation of coffee and its importance to the Costa Rican economy. This afternoon, arrive in the Guanacaste region, known for its breathtaking beauty and fine sandy beaches. Upon arrival in Monteverde, take a nature walk through this spectacular ecosystem and encounter many incredible species of flora and fauna up-close. This forest is the home of the world’s largest population of the endangered quetzal, celebrated for its gorgeous jewel-toned plumage. Day 5. Monteverde

Begin your day at a cloud forest reserve in the heart of Monteverde. Venture into an enchanting, colourful world as you explore one of the world’s largest butterfly gardens with more than 30 species of tropical butterflies. Next, be dazzled in a nearby gallery containing more than 100 beautiful hummingbirds. Embark on a guided walking tour above the forest floor on a leisurely paced “Hanging Bridges” tour and get a different perspective on the cloud forest’s unique ecosystem, its mammals, birds, plants and flora. If you are feeling adventurous you may take an optional canopy zip-line tour. This evening, meet a local who will discuss fascinating facts regarding the migratory birds that flock to Costa Rica every year.

Day 6. Monteverde – Lake Arenal Cruise – Arenal

Discover the importance of conservation in Costa Rica during a visit to a tree nursery and learn about Monteverde’s reforestation efforts of indigenous trees. Traverse through the beautiful mountainous landscapes of Monteverde to Arenal, where breathtaking views of the volcano await you. Be surrounded by tranquillity on a delightful cruise on Lake Arenal, the largest and most important lake in Costa Rica. Later, check in for a 2-night stay at a typical lodge overlooking the majestic Arenal Volcano which has been generating lava for the past 30 years. Day 7. Arenal – Cano Negro – Arenal

Of all Costa Rica’s nature preserves, the remote 20,000 acres of Cano Negro are home to the largest viewable selection of indigenous wildlife. Embark on a Cano Negro guided riverboat trip in a panga (covered canoe), stopping along the way to observe and photograph the wildlife that surround you which may include crocodiles, river otters, sloths, river turtles, exotic birds and rare butterflies — all known to live in the area. The Arenal Volcano area is also known as the land of spas and hot springs. Later in the day you will have an opportunity to attain a state of complete relaxation with an optional visit to one of the finest spas in the region.

Day 8. Arenal – Zarcero – Grecia – National Theatre – San Jose

Discover the charming town of Zarcero and visit its well-known whimsical topiary garden. Continue to the small, picturesque town of Grecia to see the unusual metal church constructed of brick-red metal panes; walk the beautifully landscaped central park; or shop at the traditional local market. Later, visit San Jose’s colourful Plaza de Cultura and the National Theatre, a magnificent building of post-Baroque splendour. This evening enjoy a wonderful farewell dinner.

Day 2. San Jose – Tortuguero National Park

Begin the day surrounded by dormant volcanos and crater lakes as you journey through Braulio Carrillo National Park en route to the Caribbean lowlands. Along the way, take in the mountain vistas and Caribbean-style villages. Later, discover the natural wonders of the rainforest of Tortuguero National Park as you cruise the rivers and canals with your guide. Day 3. Tortuguero National Park

Set out on an early morning bird-watching excursion* that explores the variety of local species and migratory birds that flock to this area. Find yourself surrounded by wildlife as you embark on a nature cruise through the national park – keep an eye out for howler monkeys, sloths, toucans and caimans, as well as exotic flora. Tortuguero National Park, a study in rainforest, freshwater and marine biology, protects over 350 species of birds and mammals. Savour time to explore and seek out green macaws; 57 species of amphibians; 111 species of reptiles; and 60 mammal species, including 13 of Costa Rica’s endangered animals including jaguars, tapirs, ocelots, cougars, river otters and manatees.

Day 4. Tortuguero National Park – Sarapiquí – Tenorio Volcano

Embark on a leisurely boat ride to the mainland as you travel to the fascinating Sarapiquí region. Afterwards, the choice is yours: visit a cacao plantation to discover the history and continuing importance of cacao to Central America’s economy or stop at a pineapple plantation to learn about the different varieties of this exotic fruit. Observe the production process and sample the delicious finished product. Next, continue to your resort, tucked away in the rainforest at the foot of the Tenorio Volcano.

Day 6. Tenorio Volcano – Maleku Indigenous Village – Tenorio Volcano

This morning, set out on a cultural adventure in a Maleku indigenous village. Interact with one of the last indigenous tribes of this region and learn about how they live. This afternoon, enjoy some free time or perhaps take an optional hike out to the spectacular light blue waters of the Rio Celeste waterfalls.

Day 7. Tenorio Volcano – Manuel Antonio National Park

Day 8. Manuel Antonio National Park

Travel just minutes down the road to explore spectacular Manuel Antonio National Park, known for its pristine beaches and primary forest. Spend the morning leisurely walking the forest trails in search of native inhabitants like the three-toed sloth, agoutis, squirrel monkeys and iguanas. Take a swim in the inviting blue waters of its beaches. Relax for the remainder of the day by the pool and absorb the natural beauty of your surroundings. Day 9. Manuel Antonio National Park – Villa Blanca Cloud Forest – San Ramón

Say goodbye to the coast and travel north to the Villa Blanca Cloud Forest, originally owned by the former president of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Carazo Odio. En route, meet a local family at their coffee farm. Discover this organic coffee plantation and the natural growing methods used to make some of the best coffee in the world. Continue to the city of San Ramon – referred to as “The City of Presidents & Poets” – for a tour. Day 4. Sacred Valley of the Incas-Ollantaytambo-Sacred Valley of the Incas

Experience the lifestyle of the modern Andean people and delve into their culture when you travel to a nearby community and interact with the locals. This afternoon, visit the spectacular Ollantaytambo ruins, the only Inca settlement that has been continually inhabited since its inception. Day 7. Cuzco

Day 9. Uros Floating Islands – Las Chullpas de Sillustani – Lake Titicaca

The Titicaca area, steeped in tradition and folklore, is the centre of Incan legends. Enjoy a morning cruise to the floating islands of the Uros people of Lake Titicaca. Experience walking on the spongy surface made from compacted beds of tortora reeds and meet the locals, learning about their history and lifestyle. Day 2. Quito

At the start of your city tour, enjoy a special visit to a Children International Community Centre, supported by the Collette Foundation.* Meet some of the children benefiting from the nutritional support and healthy cooking education that is the focus of this group’s mission. Learn about Quito’s colonial centre on a tour featuring the Presidential Palace and 17th-century Church of La Compañía. Get to know your fellow travellers during a welcome lunch overlooking the Pululahua volcanic crater. Day 3. Quito – San Cristóbal Island, Galapagos – Embark Ship

Fly to beautiful San Cristóbal Island, gateway to your Galapagos eco-adventure. After enjoying lunch aboard the m/v Galapagos Legend, arrive at the Port Baquerizo Moreno for an up-close look at the endangered tortoises that call the San Cristóbal Cerro Colorado Tortoise Reserve home. Day 4. Española Island (Gardner Bay and Suarez Point)

Board your panga to visit Gardner Bay. Guarded by a colony of sea lions, the beach is home to Galapagos hawks and endemic finches. Swim and snorkel with the marine life, including manta rays and white-tipped sharks. Continue on and meander through the volcanic terrain of Suarez Point. During your nature walk, watch for hooded mocking birds, lava lizards, Sally Lightfoot crabs and blue-footed boobies. Venture to count Waved Albatross at the world’s largest colony. Finally, visit the spectacular Soplador blowhole where water shoots 75 feet into the air.

Day 5. Floreana Island (Post Office Bay and Cormorant Point)

Land at storied Post Office Bay, named for a barrel left in 1793 by Captain James Colnett as a “post office” for passing sailors. Continue the tradition and leave a letter for a loved one. Snorkel, if you choose, with green sea turtles or set out to search for Darwin’s finches and yellow warblers. Sail to Cormorant Point and its olivine green sand beach. Try to spot stingrays and reef sharks in the emerald waters. Learn about the ecosystem’s unusual plants. You may also observe graceful flamingos or spot a small colony of penguins. Seize another chance to snorkel and swim near playful sea lions!

Day 6. Santa Cruz Island (Charles Darwin Research Station & Highlands)

Eisit the famous Charles Darwin Research Station and see the giant tortoises from the station’s breeding programme. Trek through the Santa Cruz highlands to Cerro Chato and find more giant tortoises. Take a break to savour some organic Galapagos coffee before we embark on a walk inside dormant lava tubes to gain insight on how these pristine islands formed. Enjoy time to explore Port Ayora town.

Day 7. Daphne Island – Disembark Ship – Baltra Island – Guayaquil

Garner panoramic views as you circumnavigate Daphne Island. Keep an eye out for marine iguanas, fur seals and crabs teetering along the rocky shore. Bid farewell to the Galapagos and fly to the lively city of Guayaquil. Get familiar with this community known as the “Pearl of the Pacific” on a city tour featuring a visit to the Malecón 2000 waterfront area and the 19th-century neighbourhood of Las Peñas with its Spanish-style houses. From Santa Ana Hill, look out over the city and the Guayas River.
